Description

A Complex Integration of Multiple Brain Systems Course, training therapists in to deliver the Initial Directed Activation. Supporting you to create an active and present therapeutic attachment relationship, mobilizing effective emotional activation and inviting relational connection and safeness.

This course gives you 3 hours of videos with demonstrations, interviews and practices. Video transcripts mean you can read and digest as well as listen and watch. With an additional two hours of interactive questions and reflective moments; we are deliberately attending to the multiple mediums in which your learning occurs.

And the impact of this training?

Creating a transparent collaborative alliance enables the patient to work effectively with high levels of activation, building on their strengths and capacity, and disentangling these from their anxiety, shame and guilt.

We will teach you about and demonstrate how to use the Initial Directed Activation. Most importantly, we will provide opportunities for you to practice and learn the Initial Directed Activation to enhance your psychotherapy practice and maximise your effectiveness.

And when you want to see more and progress your learning, we have in depth investigations of the therapeutic process and more. Beatriz and Terry Sheldon's CIMBS website is: complexintegrationmbs.com

Online courses created with Dr Jessica Bolton

Albert (Terry) Sheldon M.D. Is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Washington, Seattle and has taught psychotherapy for 20 years. He has trained in and practiced many therapeutic modalities, including CBT, EMDR, hypnosis, group therapy, psychodynamic, mindfulness, and -most extensively – Intensive Short- Term Dynamic Psychotherapy.

Beatriz Winstanley MEd.Psych has practiced psychotherapy in Vancouver, & Seattle for 25 years and trained and supervised clinical counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists for the past 10 years.

Now in collaboration, they have developed this new paradigm in psychotherapy Complex Integration Of Multiple Brain Systems. This approach integrates recent neuroscience research on neuroplasticity, brain development, and therapeutic change.

In these courses, they have teamed up with Dr Jessica Bolton to bring CIMBS to a wider audience and to increase the learning opportunities available.

Deliberate practice exercise
Deliberate practice exercises ensure theory moves into clinical practice.

Repetitive practice is not easy to do on our own. That's where we help. Our exercises enable you to take the theory and build it into your practice - one step at a time. We chunk the Initial Directed Activation into bitesize pieces and help you practice them until they flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CIMBS?

From their ComplexIntegrationMBS website, Beatriz and Terry Sheldon tell us:

Our brain has many complex Brain Systems (vision, hearing, coordination, the autonomic nervous system, etc). These systems enable us to live and flourish in a wide variety of circumstances. In addition, there are other Brain Systems that utilise the energy and wisdom of our emotions, direct our motivations, protect us from danger and build close nourishing relationships. When these emotional systems are differentiated from each other they can function independently and then be fully integrated enabling us to function at our highest capacity. CIMBS uses targeted therapeutic interventions to modulate the suppression, differentiation and/or activation of the different Brain Systems that have been wired together in a person’s brain by early developmental experiences or traumas. CIMBS maximises the mind’s ability to modify the brain’s structure known as neuroplasticity. CIMBS is our therapeutic approach to the overarching therapeutic paradigm.

What is Neurophysiopsychotherapy™?

Neuro – working directly with the functioning of different neural networks. Physio – we are constantly providing our patients with new physical [visceral] experiences and novel need-satisfying experiences in the present moment. Psycho - paying attention to psychological brain systems. Therapy - active involvement, creating a stabilising relationship in the context of the stress of new learning.

What does CIMBS prioritise?

1. Gathering evidence about how the patient/client’s Brain Systems are operating in the present moment, in real time. 2. Assessing attachment relationship patterns 3. Accessing, activating and differentiating multiple brain systems 4. Noticing and reinforcing positive feelings, strengths and new adaptive neuropathways 5. Shifting the internal balance from avoidance to approach 6. Providing ongoing successful present moment experiential learning.

How is the course experiential?

During the course, you can get very actively involved in learning the skills and techniques involved in this approach. We prioritise your experience in the present moment and help you learn more effectively by encouraging

  • your active involvement,
  • regulated emotional experiences
  • practicing deliberately the new skills you are learning.

It can be challenging to stay active when learning via an online / computer based platform so we have interwoven active exercises throughout the course. We encourage you to pay careful attention to your experience so you can use the opportunity to notice your responses and learn about how your systems are activated.

Will this learning really have an immediate impact on my clinical work?

Given the course is highly experiential – the potential for it to really impact you is increased. You can sit back, but your involvement will be significantly related to your outcomes! So the answer is yes, if you practice and work at it. CIMBS is a fast and effective psychotherapy because the process of activation and differentiation of multiple brain systems enables the client to come to a new Integration of more complex and flexible mental functioning. This leads to a new trajectory of growth and adaptive functioning where the client/patient achieves their best potential for the present, and freedom to continue maximising further development in the future.
